What Lineage Carries Forward

A familiar form can carry a different history each time it returns.

How recurring forms, colour and physical paint connect memory and inheritance in Arcos's Lineage series.

A curve returns, but the colour within it has changed. A broad turn remains recognisable while its painted edge becomes thinner, rougher or more open. Across Lineage, this relationship between familiarity and difference gives the paintings their connection.

The title points towards inheritance: the memories, patterns and traces that link one generation with another. What is carried forward can remain recognisable even as it takes a different form.

What remains recognisable

Lineage Blanc / 01 and Lineage Blanc / 03 share a closely related looping structure. In / 01, orange and yellow meet passages of dark blue. In / 03, warmer, paler mixtures run through similar turns. The eye can follow a familiar route, yet colour changes where attention settles.

That resemblance is not an exact repeat. It suggests how a trace can carry something forward while other details change.

Repetition changes what it carries

In these acrylic paintings, repetition is also a physical event. Acrylic paint is placed on the canvas before a plotter moves a real brush along a programmed path. The brush carries and mixes the paint as it moves, with changes in paint load and contact leaving different marks.

The recurring movement gives the works a shared structure. A thinner passage or a meeting of colours records what happened on each particular surface.

The surface changes the relationship

Lineage Blanc and Lineage Noir bring that idea onto different grounds. White primed cotton canvas remains visible around the painted paths in Blanc. In Noir, exposed black canvas separates and surrounds the colour.

The ground changes how the recurring forms are encountered. Pale paint on black has a different weight from a dark passage on white.

Looking from one work to another

Look at the low crossing in Lineage Blanc / 01 and the related turn in / 03. The movement is recognisable, but different colours meet there.

The related forms connect the paintings. The paint makes each one distinct.
